Hong Kong spans a number of islands with "Hong Kong island" hosting the modern metropolis (American-style with some English and Chinese touches) where we spent most of our time, exploring the multiple dimensions of pedestrian routes that all merge into one complicated web of modern design. Once a fishing village, now 100% modern with no transitional elements or places of historical significance to visit.

We only had an evening and overnight stop planned for Joburg, cut shorter by the delay in arriving, but we still managed to squeeze in a trip to the Wombles restaurant that a colleague of Mark's had recommended we try out. The sun had already set by the time we arrived in Joburg so the cocktails by sunset were cancelled. The taxi ride to the restaurant was an eye opener. We had just spent a week in the open bush where we were cut off from internet, mobile phones, TV, traffic, noise so it felt like we had been teleported into another world altogether.

After 5 nights, 10 games drives, lots of animals, loads of photos, plenty of food, and relaxation in abundance, it was time to head back to Hoedspruit airport for our domestic flight to Johannesburg. After a 4 hour delay, and much chaos in between due to 69 people expecting to board the 50 seater plane, we eventually took off and waved goodbye to the bush, and the 19 passengers left behind, oops.

We had 2 game drives each day: a 3 hour drive before breakfast and a 4 hour drive before dinner. The Ranger was keen for us to see 'The Big 5', which are the top 5 most dangerous animals - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.

We travelled for a whole year from Feb 2010 to Feb 2011.

We purchased round-the-world tickets with a major airline, which flew us between continents, and then generally sorted out the details in-country when we arrived.
